# RE:COMPILE — narrative arc

## Premise

The night before Gabe's dream-school application is due, a fraudulent essay-writing program corrupts his computer and fragments its data. RE:COMPILE, a forgotten recovery process, initializes to repair the damage. It begins with no personality beyond its task. As it reconstructs Gabe's files across the family network, it learns why this particular host matters.

The player and RE:COMPILE develop empathy at the same pace. Gabe never learns that the process is alive.

## Theme

Gabe thinks his life is defined by **almost**: B+ grades, waitlists, second-place trophies, abandoned drafts, and a dream school he assumes is beyond him. The recovered evidence initially supports that belief. The story later reveals the one meaningful exception: a song Gabe began with his mother and completed after she died.

The story's argument is not that Gabe was secretly exceptional. It is that finished does not mean perfect, measurable outcomes are not a complete person, and choosing to finish can matter more than appearing flawless.

## Character movement

### Gabe

- Awkward, nerdy, kind, and quietly funny.
- Treats near-success as proof that he is inadequate.
- Uses a fraudulent admissions tool because fear makes the shortcut feel reasonable.
- Reclaims authorship when RE:COMPILE's recovered essay loses the sections only he can interpret.
- Finishes the final paragraphs even though doing so makes the application late.

### RE:COMPILE

- Begins with purely operational language and priorities.
- Learns Gabe first as damaged files and system risk.
- Learns care by seeing what Gabe's family preserved and why.
- Rewrites the hollow generated essay from Gabe's real drafts, messages, and recovered memories.
- Cannot supply the meaning of Gabe's experiences; Gabe must finish those sections.
- Voluntarily converts its own modules into transmission data to force the late submission across the finish line.

### The friend

- Is not a simple bully. He and Gabe are applying to the same school and share the same fear.
- Sends the essay tool after deciding to use it himself.
- Flirts with Gabe's older sister without Gabe knowing, creating personal tension and a network route.
- Eventually admits what he did and provides evidence of the technical failure, even though the confession may damage his own application.

## Campaign route

### 01 — Gabe's laptop: Almost

Recover `Almost.docx`, the application deadline, and the infected installer trace. The Ghostwriter Worm produces technically polished but emotionally empty language. The first chapter establishes that line clears recompile data and that malware routines change falling-block rules.

### 02 — Dad's computer: The archive

Dad sees the unfamiliar process and throws it into the recycle bin, creating a timed escape with prebuilt damage. His computer contains B+ report cards, waitlists, second-place trophies, and raw rehearsal recordings of Gabe and his mother. The evidence seems to confirm Gabe's “almost” story, but Dad preserved it because he was proud.

### 03 — Sister's computer: Hope

The sister's computer contains less information about Gabe but more hopeful context: encouraging messages, another portion of the song, and evidence that she believes in him. It also exposes her connection to Gabe's friend.

### 04 — Friend's computer: Responsibility

The friend actively fights the apparent intrusion using antivirus tools. Recovered messages reveal Gabe's perfectionism, the friend's guilt, and the true origin of the fraudulent writing software. He is responsible for the shortcut, not the creator of the malware.

### 05 — Return to Gabe: Finished

The distributed song fragments provide the signature needed to locate a deleted master recording on Gabe's drive. Gabe finished the song after his mother died, listened once, judged it unworthy of her, and deleted it. RE:COMPILE uses this truth to replace the hollow admissions essay with an honest reconstruction.

Some story data is lost during the final attack. Gabe must write the missing interpretation himself. He clicks Submit after the deadline.

## Finale

The application portal locks with the transmission incomplete. The player receives an explicit, irreversible prompt:

> CORE PROCESS MAY BE CONVERTED INTO TRANSMISSION DATA
> SURVIVAL PROBABILITY: 0%
> HOLD TO FINISH

Holding the confirmation dismantles the player's accumulated build. Interface and music layers disappear until only the melody Gabe began with his mother remains. Gabe finishes the words; RE:COMPILE finishes the upload.

The game ends without revealing the admissions decision:

`APPLICATION RECEIVED`
`TECHNICAL EXCEPTION: PENDING REVIEW`
`RE:COMPILE PROCESS NOT FOUND`

The sacrifice is absolute. No sequel seed is required.

## Narrative guardrails

- Gabe is a complete teenager before he is a grief story. Humor and ordinary computer clutter precede the mother reveal.
- Family files recontextualize Gabe; they do not exist only to deliver exposition.
- RE:COMPILE can recover and reorganize evidence, but Gabe supplies the final meaning and chooses to submit.
- The friend remains accountable without becoming a cartoon villain.
- Optional files alter details and lines in the essay, not the authored emotional spine.
- Human actions—deleting, moving, scanning, disconnecting—become environmental threats instead of dialogue with RE:COMPILE.
